The Cornwall Moving House Checklist: 8 Weeks to Moving Day

Most moving checklists are written for a city terrace with a skip outside. Cornwall moves have their own failure modes: removers booked solid on summer Fridays, lanes that a 7.5-tonner can't enter, school admissions run by a different council than the one you're leaving. This checklist covers the lot — tick items off as you go (your ticks aren't saved, so screenshot when you're done).

The 8-week countdown

• 8 weeks out — book your remover. The single most time-sensitive job on this list. Summer and end-of-month Fridays in Cornwall book out 6–8 weeks ahead. Get quotes now (here's what moves should cost) — or let us match you below.
• 8 weeks out — declutter room by room. Removers price by volume and crew-hours; every shelf you empty is money off the quote. Loft, garage and shed first — that's where the never-used stuff lives.
• 6 weeks out — sort schools and time off. School moves go through the destination council's in-year admissions (Cornwall Council if you're heading this way — allow several weeks). Book moving day plus the day after off work.
• 6 weeks out — check access at both ends. Narrow lane? Harbour street? No parking within 50 metres? Tell the remover now so the right van and any shuttle are priced in — this is the classic Cornwall moving-day surprise.
• 4 weeks out — start the address admin. Bank, DVLA, HMRC, employer, pensions, insurance. Set up a Royal Mail redirect — cheap insurance against whatever you forget.
• 4 weeks out — start packing rarely-used rooms. Books, off-season clothes, the spare room. Decide now whether you want a professional pack — self-packed boxes usually carry limited insurance cover.
• 2 weeks out — utilities, council tax, GP. Final meter-reading dates with energy and water; notify both councils of your dates; register with a GP near the new address (Cornwall practices ask for proof of address).
• 1 week out — pack to 80%, prep the awkward stuff. Defrost the freezer, drain the mower and BBQ gas (removers won't carry fuel), dismantle what you agreed to dismantle. Confirm arrival time with the crew.
• Day before — the first-night box goes in the car. Kettle, mugs, tea, loo roll, chargers, bedding, meds, kids' and pets' essentials. In the car, not the van — so it can't get loaded and buried.
• Moving day — meters, keys, beds. Read meters at both properties (photo them), hand old keys back by the completion deadline, and make the beds before anything else gets unpacked. Everything else can wait until tomorrow.
